Disciplining on the Road

Surviving A Small Place Disciplining With A Two Year Old

Let’s face the facts. Two year olds can be a rough breed and disciplining them poses a challenge. as we travel this year (in an RV) we find the space limiting and disciplining takes a different way these days.

Little space

With three boys (6, 4, 2) running crazy in the house, separation was key for us. They often spiraled off each others presence and my husband and I would give them time to be apart and calm their crazy bodies. Well, an RV doesn’t give the space for me to separate myself, never mind the three boys, this left us scratching our heads for what to do.

They Have SO Much Energy

Where does it come from? I’m not sure, but if I could bottle an ounce of their spastic nature and use the gogo they have at work. I would be a star employee. With all this energy running around in their little bodies I found getting outside was key to saving our sanity. we try our best (and I know outside time is not always possible) to get the boys outside for run around time. This helps everyone to get out some energy, move their bodies and hopefully be a little calmer.

Getting outside

There Has To Be More

I know, I know, simple getting outside does not stop the craziness from exuding from their bodies. When we feel overwhelmed we give each other breaks or each of us will take a boy or two somewhere else to separate. Now this isn’t possible when I am at work 3-4 days a week. John is left to deal with all that comes.

The other method we use when I am not home is bed or rest time. Yes they tend to jump around on the bed, but John is good about coaching them to calm down and they are not able to rejoin the group until they can calm their bodies.

Getting calm sometimes takes the whole family

well small spaces bring challenges just as big spaces bring challenges too. We all have to work with the space and personalities we live with. Do you live in a small space? What are your strategies for disciplining? Let me know in the comments below!
