Our Family’s Journey From Three Bedrooms to RV
No one enjoys downsizing, but isn’t there freedom to have a little and not a lot to keep up with. With three little boys and a dog we accumulated many toys and trinkets in our apartment. We knew all of these items were not going to fit in our 25 foot RV. Downsizing had to happen, but we didn’t know where to start.
Downsizing means – Pack Only Essentials
Really only essentials. Do your kids need 17 toys, no. Nor do they need every pair of pants they have. Boil down the things they love and only bring those or simply pick 5 and stop there.
Note The Weather
Only bring what you need for clothes. Are you staying in a warm environment ? Then only pack what you truly need to wear. We planned to stay warm so we packed up all our NH winter gear and only brought a small just in case supply for the kids.
Get Used To Frequent Shopping Trips
Back home I shopped once every 2-3 weeks. Now my husband shops once, sometimes twice a week. With lots of hungry boys and a small fridge there’s no other way around it.
Utilize The Outdoor For Exercise
With little room to spare when downsizing there’s certainly no room for exercise equipment. Use the outdoors as your workout and save space. This works well for toys too. I know my boys love nothing more than sticks and rocks to play with.
I hope this helped you take perspective and see the possibility to downsize, it just takes some decisions and work, but you too can make it happen. Read more about our RV journey in our RV Life post.
