To Save Time and Money
Living the RV life sounds like a life full of fun and adventuring. The good news is, it is. Though admits all the fun and exploring there are expenses that often arise that you didn’t take into account at first. There’s also adjusting to a life in a small space.
After living in the road for a month we have compiled our favorite RV hacks to keep you adventuring and worrying less about expenses.
Boondocking
If you haven’t heard of boondocking it’s when you camp or RV off the beaten path or in a dry site. These are usually campsites without running water or electricity. You’re simply out enjoying nature. You can often boondock near hiking trails or lakes to get the most out of you’re trip.
Since I am working as a travel nurse we like to stay at state parks on the days I’m working. This helps us to be close by for travel in and out of work. Then on my days off we adventure out for a couple of nights to explore. This allows us to see what Colorado has to offer and venture farther away from work for a few nights, while saving money. Campgrounds have a set cost each night (state parks are usually on the cheaper side) while boondocking is usually free.
The Downside
Make sure to pack plenty of fresh water. We often buy jugs of water to take with us. Go easy on your tanks (black and grey) as they can fill pretty quickly without a place to dump. Campendium has a great list of free campsites with a quick search. These are first come, first serve so head to the sites early to get a spot.
Dump Stations
When out in the middle of the wild it’s a good idea to have an easy place in mind to fill up fresh water and dump your feet and black tanks. If you are planning to boondock for more than a few days dumping your tanks will be a necessity.
You can easily search for dump stations near you with pricing and reviews at RV Dumps. This is an easy to navigate site with reviews from their users on where to find the best places and prices.
Make sure to leave a car or something behind in your camping spot when you go to dump. Then you’ll be free to pull back in and stay the rest of your trip.
Keep Stock on the Essentials
When hitting the road for the country side, make sure to drive by your local grocery store to stalk up in necessities like bread and milk. We were happy to have loaded up in tax free NH before we hit the road west.
Load up on any must haves like water before hitting the road.
Save Water
One way we save ourselves from the constant reloading of fresh water is by bucket dishes. This is a little name my husband and I coined for the way we do dishes. We simply load up a small bucket of water in the sink and wash all the dishes, a quick rinse from the sink and they are good to go.
This saved the constant running of water draining our fresh water or grey tank. We then take the bucket and dump it outside preserving the filling of our grey tank. It’s a win win in my book.
Laundry
Another water waster when adverting to the great outdoors, make laundry easy by filling a bucket with warm water and laundry soap. Give all the clothes a scrub and hang out to dry. Laundry in a snap.
Side note – if you are somewhere windy be mindful of hanging your clothes outside. They may just blow away. Not that that ever happened to us. Pack some clothespins for easy clipping.
Sunday Worship
Even while in the road we wanted to continue to set aside time to worship with Jesus. Each Sunday we listen to a sermon and have music together. We hope once churches are open again we will be able to worship with fellow believers and have some fellowship together.
We also try to do a daily nightly devotional. We are enjoying the questions it brings out in the kids when they really sit down to learn and think about all Jesus has done. We really enjoy the devotional pictures below.
We are enjoying our time on the road with lots of adventures and fun. Though there are some downsides like laundry we hope these hacks have encouraged you tot air in all life’s adventures and go for it.
