Finding New Techniques to Help Our Littlest Learners
Many of you have heard me joke about my middle son. He is strong willed, temperamental, knows exactly what he wants and what type of learner he wants to be. I know his tenacity will make a great leader, but at home he can be a little rambunctious to say the least.
I often admit to others I’ll probably quit homeschooling when he’s old enough for kindergarten, but despite my shoo off (because I hate answering that question) I was becoming increasingly frustrated trying to teach him. I couldn’t understand why things weren’t clicking.
I realized I was on my own timeline instead of his. Instead of letting him find his way learning, I was demanding he finish by a certain time. I missed the beauty of homeschooling, the whole point was to give my kids flexibility and I wasn’t giving him any. Managing life as a boy mom can be a challenge.
Here’s how I let go of expectations without skipping class time
- Try New Techniques: We’ve been rotating flashcards, writing practice, games, videos, songs, whatever learning style I can get my hands on we’re trying. Together we’re finding what works best. We love these Dr Suess flash cards that go great with the ABC book. An app called Duolingo also has a fun learning to read app that my son loves !
- Have Patience: I was letting my own agenda get in the way and wasn’t giving my son room to breathe. When I have patience and let my schedule go he can have space and time to learn.
- Give yourself and Your Learner a Break: We all need time to recharge and rest. Especially, when we are trying something new. Take a break from a difficult task for a few hours or even a day. Then come back to the problem new and refreshed.
- Ask for Help: If you are continuing to struggle, ask for help. Whether it be from a school, teacher or friend. Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it.
Each child is different and learns differently. If only they were all the same, my homeschooling would be way easier, but thank Jesus they are all uniquely made. Give yourself a break and a few of these new techniques. If they do not work remember to ask for help 🙂
How do you manage the difficult learner in your home?
