Hiking; More Than A Past Time Outside

Redefining Education and Physical Activity During Distancing

Life feels flipped upside down right now. There is plenty of uncertainty and being stuck inside certainly doesn’t help. With 3 little boys I can fully understand the need to get outside and run, run, run! Little boys or girls have a heard time understanding why we are stuck inside and why they can’t go see family or friends. I find getting outside in nature helps distract all of us.

We’ve always enjoyed hiking as a family. I used to wish we had more time to escape outdoors and adventure, but with activities and work obligations family hikes weren’t a priority. Now, with little to do besides hang out with each other we have found a new love of the outdoors.

Binoculars help take in all the animals

I’ve taken hiking to a new level, being a homeschool mom before the virus I will admit I had a head start. Now, during hikes we take a pencil pen and provide much needed exercise and education. This week we did a hiking scavenger hunt. We found pine cones, sticks, moss, rocks and lots of dirt. We searched for beaver dams and man made bridges. The adventure tuckered them out and they remember more information then anything I have taught them sitting at a desk.

Just yesterday, my 6 year old proceeded to tell me how beavers get into their homes, something I couldn’t even remember from the reading and my 4 year old telling me how beavers eat trees like a triangle. The little information they hold onto and remember always surprises me. Next time you are struggling for interesting and exciting school work that will burn some energy, try getting them all outside! I find the outdoors helps me as well as the boys.

We’re ready to go
