Organization for Dummies

How to get all the things together in a short amount of time.

Most people asked me how I stay so organized. I’ll admit, I have a lot going on most weeks. Between homeschooling, working as a nurse, 3 young boys, family life and all those chores. Days can seem unending and impossible and believe me some days are. I find that when I keep everything organized and on track, I have less of those hards days and an easier time getting back on track when those days arise.

Getting organized may seem like a daunting waste of time, but when people approach me and say “You have it all together” I laugh. Why? Because I don’t not even a little bit, but I do have a killer list and routine that puts it all together, even on my hardest days.

You may be asking, where to start? Or how do I even begin? Don’t worry girl, I got you.

Here are my pro tips for getting the most chaotic life together

  • Have a list : Not just some thrown together to do list with everything you want to finish in your life. A list of the things you can realistically get done tomorrow even if all hell breaks loose.
    • Here’s mine: Laundry, Dishes, Baths (yes, I need a reminder to wash my children), cook dinner (stop laughing, I need this reminder too), post on social, connect with two friends
    • Not too exciting, but these small reminders keep me going throughout the day and keep my brain free from clutter
  • Have a brain dump: A brain dump is simple, grab a pen and a piece of paper and writing down all the things in your brain. Maybe, it’s the project you must finish for work, maybe you need to clip the kids nails, who knows. The important part is everything in your brain goes on this dump list every morning. This leaves your mind free to think and be free of all that anxious tension.
    • I write out my brain dump each morning before writing my to do list. It allows me to pick out the priorities for the day. Some people find it helpful before bed, allowing their mind to relax for sleep. Do what’s best for you.
  • Have a routine: This is especially important if you are a stay at home mom. The days can seem long and daunting if you and those wild children don’t know what to expect. I find our days go a lot smoother when we have a schedule and the kids know what to expect ahead of time. My boys now know that each morning first is school time and reading before they are allowed time with the TV or kindle. Find a routine that works for you and stink to it.
  • Go with the flow: This is a must and the hardest of all. I’m a type A stick to the schedule type of person. I tend to blow a gasket when things go haywire, but learning to adjust and flow will make life better and happier. Remember, turn, adjust, keep going and there’s always tomorrow.

These are my killer organization tips. I hope they help you feel less overwhelmed and smoother throughout your day.
